ad Understanding a Concussion

A concussion is an injury that takes place to the brain. It can create some differences in terms of how your brain is able to function. Most of the time, the changes are only going to last for a couple of days. However, they can last for longer depending on the type of injury that occurs. They can also cause a person to suffer from memory loss, lose their coordination, and have a headache.

When most people think about a concussion, they think about someone being hit in the head. It can be with an object, during sports, during a car accident, or with a weapon. However, a concussion can also occur of the body is shaken in a violent and intense manner. It is possible that a person can lose consciousness during the events that create a concussion too.

A person may get up and think they are just fine after such an event. However, they don't realize the full impact of what has just occurred. The changes in their actions and their disorientation is what prompts others around them to realize that something isn't right. In many instances when someone is in a type of accident, medical personnel will evaluate them for a concussion as a precaution.

While concussions may be common, they shouldn't be ignored. The brain has been affected and it should be given time to heal. It is a good idea to refrain from extreme physical activity and contact sports until a doctor has released you to resume normal activities.

Should the symptoms of the concussion get worse, it is important to seek medical attention right away. If a person doesn't know who they are, where they are, or they are vomiting then there can be more damage than thought. If they have an extreme headache it could be due to severe pressure on the brain. Procedures may be necessary to relieve the swelling.

Since a person can react differently to a concussion, the treatment plan for a patient can vary. It is important to note that with each consecutive concussion it will be harder for a person to recover as the brain isn't designed for such events to happen often.
